Gobi Gurvan Saihan national park is located 45km to west from Dalanzadgad city, covering an area of 2 million hectares. It extends 380km from east to west and 80 km from north to south.
The park comprises gravel and rubble plains, salt wetlands, wide and narrow valleys with springs and oases. The most well known place in the national park is the Yolyn Am or “vulture’s Valley”. It is a narrow rock canyon stretching 40km long containing a glacier in the middle, which only melts in late July. During winter the small stream in the canyon builds up a thick layer of ice. The walls of the canyon rise so steeply that they block sunlight from the stream below and the ice remains throughout the year. Yolyn Am is one of the most beautiful place in the national park. There is a museum of natural history of Gobi at entrance to Yolyn Am Valley.
